Here is a terrific view of the open desert with the OPD runner (Team #57) leading what seems to be an endless line of runners and support vehicles from the competing teams.

The OPD runner on the right has just started his “leg” of the race. The runner on the left is being caught by a “catcher” as he checks his completion time for his running time. The OPD “Follow vehicle” can be seen in the background.

The main antenna (144 and 440 MHz...strapped to the railing) used by the Pahrump communications center is on the left.  The APRS tracking antenna (144 MHz) is on the right, next to the room used for the comm center.

“Antennas Everywhere!!!” In the hotel parking lot at Pahrump, this serious communication vehicle for team #29 was spotted. I counted 17 antennas.

In Pahrump, these snowy peaks are roughly in the direction that the runners have to pass through the “high country” before dropping down into Las Vegas.

A glimpse of the “night life” at a cold checkpoint where many runners and their communications support people are waiting for their team to arrive for the baton exchange.

At the Las Vegas communications center, all the antennas are aimed at the top of the mountain pass. The OPD Las Vegas team made use of a cross-band repeater located at Sandy Valley Road comm. center. They would hear all the backbone 144 MHz messages on the other side of the mountains being rebroadcast on 446 MHz (and vice versa). If you enlarge the picture...you can see the snowy peaks above the antennas.

The fifth OPD communications center was located in the Emerald Suits, near the finish line for the race.  Here is one of the three ops, Dieter - N6ZKD, at the Las Vegas comm center.
