Topic:  Testing a DATV Station using DVB-S

Abstract:  Most ham radio Amateur Television (ATV) stations and repeaters in use today still utilize analog technology. The purpose of this paper is to explain how to set-up and test a Digital-ATV (DATV) station to other hams...and to demonstrate the performance that can be achieved by using DATV. At the 2009 Digital Communications Conference, the authors presented a paper on "Planning a Digital-ATV Station for DVB-S". Now, the authors present the results that were obtained by testing and using the DATV station they had planned. The authors learned a lot about different aspects of DATV during this project. We needed to dig into video resolution standards, better understand the inner workings of MPEG-2 latency, and develop a clearer understanding of the effect of peak-to-average power as related to de-rating a power amplifier for QPSK modulation.

The testing by the authors demonstrates that DATV really does produce higher-quality video than analog-ATV under adverse conditions!!

TAPR PSR Journal 2010 Paper on DATV - by W6HHC and DC8UE

Topic:  Overview of DVB-S Modulation for Digital-ATV

Abstract:  The purpose of this article is to introduce a few DATV DVB-S modulation concepts that are typically not understood by hams and even analog ATVers. This paper begins by comparing the PROs and the CONs between DVB-S technology and ATSC technology for use with ham radio D-ATV. DVB-S modulation has an advantage over analog-ATV and other digital-ATV modulations in that the RF bandwidth can be as narrow as 2 or 3 MHz. This article will walk through various DATV factors for determining the resulting RF bandwidth for DVB-S modulation. Finally, the paper looks at the impact of amplifier linearity on the quality of the DATV QPSK transmission.

Topic:  Planning a DATV Station on DVB-S

Abstract:  Most ham radio Amateur Television (ATV) stations and repeaters in use today still utilize analog technology. The purpose of this paper is to explain Digital-ATV (DATV) to other hams, with the hope that it might make the transition from analog-ATV to Digital-ATV a little more straightforward. The paper begins with a review and comparison of various commercial DTV standards that are in use around the world. A top-down design methodology session is then conducted to sort through a number of design alternatives to plan a DATV station. The planning session chooses the DVB-S standard for DATV over the competing United States-based ATSC standard. The paper concludes by describing the Forward-Error-Correction factors and Symbol-Rate factors that determine the RF bandwidth for a DVB-S DATV station.
