A Bit of Club Breakfast History

The current monthly club breakfast began in early 1971. Then Activities Chairman Bob - WB6QNU (now AF6C) proposed a club breakfast to be held monthly on a Saturday morning. It was discussed at the January 1971 Board Meeting and recorded in the February 1971 issue of RF. The proposed start date was to be the First Saturday in February, but whether it began then or a month or two later is currently under research. However, in the August 1971 issue of RF The July 3rd, 1971 breakfast was discussed in detail; the attendance was 21 folks at Manny's Restaurant on 17th St. at the 55 fwy. in Santa Ana.

Since that time the club has held breakfasts on a continuous basis (occasionaly missing a month due to conflicts or restaurant problems). The original time was "around" 8:30 AM which is now "at" 8:00 AM. Over the years we have met at at least 20 different restaurants and occasionally at a park.

For many years the breakfast was normally held on the 1st Saturday of each month; it was occasionally canceled or held on the second Saturday if it interfered with a holiday weekend or holiday. Due to the 2010 New Year weekend holiday the January 2010 board meeting was moved to Jan 9th. A that meeting the board decided to permanently move the breakfast date to the second Saturday of each month. At that time we were meeting at The Jägerhaus Restaurant and the back room was occupied by the Anaheim High School monthly reunion. The positive of this change was two-fold, we could get the back room at the The Jägerhaus Restaurant and the second Saturday would interfere with less holiday weekends. The negative was the short time between the board and general meetings - which became even shorter when the first of the month was a Friday. While meeting on the second Saturday the December breakfast was often canceled since it often would have on occurred within a day of the Christmas dinner and party.

Breakfasts continued to be held at The Jägerhaus Restaurant back room on the second Saturday through January of 2015. At that meeting some of the new board members asked that the board meeting date be changed due to the a conflict on even months. The February meeting was changed to the first Saturday of the month as well as to a new venue. The February venue (Marie Callender's on Grand Ave. in Santa Ana) proved to be good and available on the first Saturday. So, after one last breakfast at the Jägerhaus Restaurant in March, The club began to meet at Marie Callender's on the first Saturday of the month. Breakfasts and board meetings continued to be held at Marie Callender's with occasional held at parks in conjunction with the California QSO event that happened on the firt Saturday in October. With the closing of the Santa Ana restaurant, The group moved to the Orange Marie Callender's on Katella in April of 2019.

At the March 2020 breakfast and board meeting COVID 19 was looming and the board discussed its options. By the third week in March the Red Cross locked its doors to club meetings, and the club began meeting online over Zoom^© for its board and general meetings.
