From Radio to Rockets

November 17th, 2023

"From Radio to Rockets" or "How I used my knowledge of ham radio to work on some very interesting projects..."

Mark Bender - KD6NOT presented a very interesting talk on space communications from the perspective of ham radio. Rocket telemetry suffers from many of the same problems hams encounter, interference, intermodulation products, power, gain, antenna design, weather and environment. Only these are generally much more critical aboard a rocket. Mark took us through each of these situations using slides and actual examples of space hardware.

Modern Day Test Instruments

Doug Millar - K6JEY was our guest speaker. He talked on modern test equipment and what you may want to have in your shack. Some members brought their multimeter to check against his standard.

First licensed as KN6JEY in 1957, he has long since become an Extra Class, and became interested in metrology in 1980. His interests are wide ranging, and he has equipment operating not only on HF, but also in the microwave spectrum from 10 to 122GHz. Doug has 302 countries confirmed for DXCC, WAS, and WAZ, plays on HF AM as well, and collects (and uses) vintage “boat anchors”.

VHF/UHF Propagation

Our July meeting featured Gordon West - WB6NOA as our guest speaker talking on VHF/UHF propagation, more precisely - "ducting". Gordon is a dynamic speaker; decades of teaching ham radio to new students showed in his effective use of props, and experiments make his talks grab your attention! (though some had a minor disappointment that he didn't "light the pickle"* - though at the price of pickles today…").
