Annual Christmas/Holiday Party

Always a big event with good food, good prizes, good socializing and the only yearly club event featuring a "Happy Hour". This year's party was held at Mimi's on 17th St. in Tustin. After happy hour, we all sat down for a good Mimi's dinner followed by craziness that only a ham could think up. The new board was introduced, the Good of the Club award was presented to Tim Goeppinger - N6GP and prizes were raffled.

Bioenno Battery

Bioenno LiFePO4 Batteries by Kevin Zanjani.

Kevin Zanjani gave us a presentation on Bioenno LiFePO4 batteries, These batteries feature significantly less weight and size and longer life than sealed lead acid batteries. They have good deep-discharge capability, built-in overcharging and over-discharging protection, and slow self-discharging. They are much safer than the Li-Ion batteries that keep appearing in the news. For more information go to the Bioenno website: https://www.bioennopower.com.

“An RF Transistor Factory Tour”

Our guest speaker was Wayne Yoshida - KH6WZ.

Wayne took us on a virtual tour of a semiconductor factory that produces high power RF transistors like those used in your solid state rig or amplifier. As always Wayne put on a great performance.

Due to the refurbishment still in progress at The Red Cross building, this meeting was held at Rodrigo's Restaurant 14882 Holt Ave., Tustin, between Irvine Blvd and Newport Ave. Dinner for members was optional.

The OCARC annual radio and electronics auction for 2019 was postponed due to difficulty finding a suitable venue. It has been rescheduled for Friday, January 17th, 2020 in place of the regular club meeting. Get your stuff ready!


Ducie Island

The Ducie Island DXpedition

Arnie, N6HC gave another exotic DX-pedition presentation. This is from his recent trip to Ducie Island.

This meeting was held at Rodrigo's Restaurant in Tustin. Many members arrived a half hour early to enjoy dinner during the meeting. The food was good! The Presentation was good!

2M DF Tape Measure Antenna Construction

Our guest presenter and teacher was David Rector - KG6GIA

A hands on construction meeting! We learned how to make a direction finding antenna using easily folded measuring tabe as the elements. Several members built their own antennas, some from kits and some from basic parts. The new antennas were then tested for SWR. The builders got a lot of help from the other membeers as they proceeded.

“APRS and Satellites / Space Station ”

Our guest speaker was Robert MacHale - KE6BLR

Robert presented some of his deep knowledge of APRS and Satellite communication. Robert maintains a website called “www.spacecommunicator.club”. He also hosts regular meetings of the Space Communicator Club where he helps students and Scout groups learn about and make ARISS contacts with the ISS.

Ken presented a recap of this years B2V Challenge Cup Relay Race and the amateur radio support that tracks the runners. Also in attendance were of our club members that took part in this years event and can add their voices to the experience.

“Using FT8 Mode in Contesting ”

Our guest speakers were Arnie Shatz - N6HC & Chip Margelli - K7JA.

Arnie and Chip presented a talk on the features of FT8 Mode and how it is changing the way we contest as well as how it is changing DXpeditions. Note: Meeting was held one week later than normal to accomodate Passover/Easter schedules.


Baker-to-Vegas 2019 Logo

“Baker-to-Vegas Challenge Cup Relay Race”

Again this year a group of members of the OCARC supported the City of Orange Police with their radio communications prowess in the annual law-enforcement race. This is a relay footrace covering 120 miles in 20 legs. The race begins outside Baker, CA and goes along Rte 127 to Shoshone, CA; on Rte 178 to the Nevada border; through Pahrump NV and along Rte 160 into Las Vegas.

In 2019 the Orange Police Department finished 30th overall out of 284 teams, and second in their division of 150 or less sworn officers. Their time for the 120 miles was 15 hours 23 minutes and 9 seconds. They finished with their best time ever beating last year's time by 12 minutes and 23 seconds.

“EME Communications
  on 10GHz”

Our guest speaker was Doug Millar - K6JEY.

Doug has been active on 10 GHz since the 1990’s. Recently he designed a portable station for terrestrial and EME (Earth-Moon-Earth) communications that he described. He has also designed several simple receiving systems for that band and shared as well.

“Winter Field Day”

The OCARC held Winter Field Day at the Ocean View School District site in Huntington Beach (17200 Pinehurst Lane). Many members and guests participated.

Setup began at 4 PM local time on Friday. It continued the next morning.

Operations were from 1900 UTC Saturday until 1900 UTC Sunday. Teardown started at 1901 UTC (11:01 AM local time) on Sunday and continued until completed.

OCARC operated class O6 (outdoor operations) and made numerous contacts. The club believes it has turned in a competitive score and is awaiting official results.

Our guest speaker was be Arnie Shatz - N6HC

Arnie presented photos and discussion of the recent Baker Island, KH1/KH7Z, DX-Pedition. Arnie was the medical representative along with all the other duties of preparation, set-up, operating, and teardown. Arnie always brings back interesting presentations from his DX-peditions. The January through March Club Breakfast and Board Meetings were held at Marie Callender's 1821 N. Grand Ave. in Santa Ana *. Except as noted, the Breakfast and Board Meetings after March were held at Marie Callenders 307 E Katella Ave. in Orange. Breakfast Board meeting were held on Saturday:

Nov 2nd, Oct 5th**, Sep 7th, Aug 3rd, Jul 6th, Jun 1st, May 4th, Apr 6th, Mar 2nd, Feb 2nd, Jan 5th.
