W6ZE/KE6YHX Corey checks in Bob AF6C, Clem W0MEC, Phil K6PAD, and Sam W6JTT. Bob sent me a return QSL Card. He tells us about damage to the avocado trees in the heat. Bob’s gardener retired, and Bob got a new one. Corey’s air conditioner needs some service. Clem is weak and almost unreadable. Bob relays Phil’s check-in to Net Control. Phil is down in the background noise, but Corey can catch occasional words. Clem tries to relay for Sam, but is almost unreadable also. Corey reads each at 15dB over s9, no copy, s6.0, and s5.9, respectively. QRT 19:47 PDT

08/01/18 2m Phone Net

W6ZE/KE6YHX Corey checks in Clem W0MEC Westminster, Phil K6PAD Huntington Beach, Dick KD6RUP Irvine, Charles N6YMK/M Tustin (Walnut/Red Hill), Sam W6JTT Garden Grove, Bob AF6C Orange, Mike W6MAO Rialto, and Steve KK6REB Cypress. Clem reads Mike OK, Steve strong, and Sam strong. He relays Phil’s check-in to Net Control. Apparently Phil and N.C. doubled, because Phil is loud and clear. Phil receives N.C. at s8, Clem s10, Sam s9, Mike s7, Steve s7, but cannot hear Dick or Charles. He had to take down his tall 2M/440 antenna when he put up his rotatable beam. Having both up is a bit of a challenge. Dick is in Irvine, and is moving to Laguna Woods in a few days. He is operating 5W with an HT. Charles is operating mobile and Net Control reads him with some choppy static, but full-copy. On the second go-round, he is on the 55fwy going on the 91, and is still full-copy. Sam cannot hear Net Control, but Net Control reads him loud and clear. He has some hash on Net Control, so Clem relays. Sam reads Phil, Clem, and Bob well over s9. He is having his air conditioner repaired tomorrow. Bob is cooking asparagus. He met with Chuck Penson, who wrote some Heathkit books. Bob was talking on 10M about the hot weather. He took a true reading of 124°F in the last heat wave. Bob is also fixing-up another “loaner radio.” Clem likes asparagus also. Steve and Bob greet each other. Steve made a contact on 10M to Tucson, Arizona, but slept through the 10M Net. His “club loaner” is working well. Mike reports 85° 31%R.H. in Rialto. It has been quiet, seismically. He made a 40M contact on the “100W-and-a-wire” net, on 7.188MHz LSB last Sunday 6p-7p. He met Steve there, the Net Control. Corey YHX reads each at s7, s6, mostly good copy, s5, s5, F.Q., s5, and s5, respectively. QRT 21:05 PDT

Corey YHX announces the 80M Net is suspended for a roofing project at his QTH.

W6ZE/KE6YHX Corey checks in Vijay KM6IZO Irvine, Tom W6ETC/M Tustin, and Phil K6PAD Huntington Beach. Vijay inquires about the Holy Jim Fire in the Saddleback Mountains. Corey refers him to https://inciweb.nwcg.gov/ Tom is running an IC-7000 into a screwdriver antenna on his mobile rig in his driveway. He is a little off-frequency, and adjusts. Tom is having feedback into his LED lights, so needs to work on some grounding. Phil is full-copy to Net Control, but he can barely read Corey, so Tom relays. Vijay tries a relay also, but Phil has no copy on him. Corey reads each at s5.6, s7.8, and s3.4, respectively. QRT 19:39 PDT

08/08/18 2m Phone Net

W6ZE/KE6YHX Corey checks in Clem W0MEC Westminster, Phil K6PAD Huntington Beach, Steve KK6REB Cypress, Tom W6ETC/Echolink Tustin, David KB6PAL/Echolink, Jeff KK6TRC/Echolink. Clem had a high noise level on the 10M Net, but 2M is fine. He is running 50W with his amp. Phil is working on getting his HF vertical back up. Steve is trying 10M with his loaner TS-140 from the Club. The heat has been a bit oppressive this week. Corey’s signal drops to Steve, so Corey switches to his secondary 2M rig. Apparently, this is an SWR-Meter problem, and Corey switches back. Tom needs to deal with some ants at his QTH. David got disconnected from Echolink. Jeff says good evening, and it has been hot at the beach. The smoke from the fires has been staying out of his area, for the time being. Jeff tells us David is back. David takes his turn, but he is driving, so cannot talk. Corey reads each at s6-s7, s7, s6, s5, s5, and s5, respectively. QRT 20:48 PDT.

08/15/18 10m Phone Net

W6ZE/KE6YHX Corey checks in Vijay KM6IZO Irvine, Tom W6ETC/M, and Clem W0MEC Westminster. Vijay has a new batch of ale brewing. Tom jokes about giving the check-ins a taste. Tom reminds Net Control to pause for Echolink stations on 2M. Jeff had some network issues, so changed routers for more reliable operation, says Tom. Clem is faint, and neither Tom nor Vijay can relay on the first round. Tom eventually relays that Clem copies Net Control at an s5, and will talk on the 2M Net. QRT 19:39 PDT.

Clem copies Net Control at s7 to s8, Nicholas and Wardy well, but Vijay weak. Dick moved from Irvine to Laguna Woods last week. The harmonics are happy for the move. He rates his movers at many zeros. Dick is running 5W with an HT, and Corey reads him full-copy. Vijay can’t copy Dick, surprisingly. Vijay is brewing a fruity Belgian Saison, a malt and wheat summer ale. Bob says good evening, and hears all stations well. Things are going well at his QTH, but the heat was difficult for his garden. Bob is retraining himself in Calculus, matrix math, and advanced astronomical theory. Tom reports 6 Echolink stations are in the queue, a first for the nets. Jeff is in Glenbrook, near Lake Tahoe, and tells us his furthest Echolink contact yet is Nicholas. Nicholas says hello from San Salvador, El Salvador, an excellent test. He will see the OPs at the next General Meeting this Friday. Jeff asks what time it is there, and Nicholas says it is one hour later, and the thunderstorms and rainy weather are remarkably different from Southern California for the season. Phil hears all but Dick and Vijay. He says hello to Bob. Wardy got some new turtles for his pond, and got some odds and ends done this morning. Tom and Nicholas are helping with some antennas, as Wardy is surrounded by trees. Mike reports 77°F 50%R.H. in Rialto, and says hello to Bob. He has a good situation with his 7-Band Buckmaster Dipole up 25ft. Steve checks in later via Echolink. Corey YHX reads each at s7, s5-s6, s5, F.Q., s5, s5, s5, s6-s7, s5, scratchy but readable, and s5, respectively. QRT 21:20 and 21:35 PDT.

W6ZE/KE6YHX Corey checks in Clem W0MEC Westminster, Phil K6PAD Huntington Beach, Steve KK6REB Cypress, Tom W6ETC/Echolink, Vijay KM6IZO/M/Echolink, Terrence AI6ZV Costa Mesa, Dave KB6PAL/Echolink, Bob WB6IXN Santa Ana, Nicholas AF6CF, Jeff KK6TRC/Echolink, and Mike W6MAO Rialto. Clem jokes about talking from the Moon on the 10M Net. Clem reads Nicholas at an s3-s4. He is running 60W on 2M. Phil has been on 20m in the evenings. He gets Australian and New Zealand stations such as ZL2OK, who is on holiday, and talks to several around this time. Phil runs 400W into a tri-band up 25ft, and the New Zealand station runs a beam and an amp at 500W from his RV. Phil hears all but Vijay; he reports Nicholas at s6, and the others at s10. No reports yet for Jeff and Mike. Phil is running 50W, and has some antenna projects to do. Steve missed the last meeting, but has been fixing one of his fans for the heat. It is working now. He receives Tom and Corey better tonight. Tom reports some odd background noise from Net Control. He has been working on a barbecue, and enjoyed talking to his second harmonics. Tom needs some clarification from Dave as to what kind of CW key he needs and if he would like to buy or borrow. Dave just needs one for a couple weekends. Vijay is a bit scratchy, but he returns to his QTH, and Corey gathers that water has been discovered at the poles on the Moon. He just got back from San Marcos, to drop off his daughter. He and XYL are now empty nesters. Terrence also couldn’t make it to the Friday meeting, and just got back from Fresno. He got a new DMR Anytone, and a Raspberry Pi ZoomSpot for a small hotspot at his QTH with WiFi. He reads Net Control at 20dB over s9, Tom and Phil at full bars, and all other stations at s9+. No report yet for Mike. Tom suggests to Terrence writing an RF article about toroids and noise suppression. Dave is looking for an inexpensive or loaner CW key. Bob reads all the stations well, with no background noise. No report yet for Mike. It has been in the 80°F’s at the QTH, and the caregiver has to be with her son-in-law tomorrow. Bob is running 40W last time he checked. Nicholas says good evening, and has a lot of work to do during the heat of the day. Jeff says good evening to the Net via Echolink, but has some technical difficulties, so flies in and flies out. Mike also had some RF problems on HF like Corey, so he put toroids on the power, and other cables to the radio, and that solved them. Headphones also help, says Mike. Corey realizes he needs an audio transformer on his radio audio output line to the computer. Corey YHX reads each at s7, s6, s6, s5-s6, s3-s4, s7, s5-s6, F.Q., F.Q., s3-s4, and s4-s5, respectively. Clem says the 10M Net was difficult, but read Net Control at s3 and Vijay at s1-s2. Corey reads Clem well, and Clem calls for check-ins as relay. Phil comes back. Clem can’t read Jack or Vijay. Sam has some hash noise on Net Control, and can barely read him. Corey receives Sam full-copy. Sam had some gardening done, but a feed line was damaged. Bob receives all the OPs well. No report yet for Jerry. He got some weeding done in the garden, and the weather has been hot. Corey asks a question for his presentation, and Bob replies that the Club name was informal in 1933. Phil relays for Jack, who is unreadable to Net Control. He reads all clearly but Vijay. No report for Jerry yet. Phil will try 80M later. Vijay doesn’t read Phil, but reads Jack. He got a new laptop, and has two batches of ale brewing. Vijay reports Jeff KK6TRC is on Echolink, but Jeff is having difficulty. Jack doesn’t read Net Control, but has a new tower with an 80/40M Inverted-V and works FT-8 with Russia (Phil relays). Jerry went camping with 200-300 at Lake Baldwin, behind Big Bear for a few weekends in a row. They camped in a cow pasture, and drove up behind Sugarloaf, then up to Heart Bar. It rained heavily up on the ridge. Jerry will try 80M later. Corey YHX reads each at s7, s4, F.Q., s7, s5, no copy, and F.Q., respectively. The background is at an s3. QRT 21:01 PDT
